A report on the Compass European IC Junior Challenge 2015

Returning from the IC European Junior Challenge in Barcelona. I was lucky enough to be GB team captain and we had a wonderful week of competition in Spain. We played Ireland, Sweden and Slovenia in our group and gained 5-1, 5-1 and 6-0 victories respectively. Although the scores may sound comfortable, all of the matches were of a very high standard and played in exactly the right spirit (there were a couple of exchanges of shirt for example). In the final, we played a very strong Spain team and after the singles both boys had won excellent matches and both girls had lost tight matches. So, it all came down to the doubles. At one set up in both matches, things were looking good but then Spanish team managed to claw their way back to a set all. The girls fought hard but ultimately went down 10-6. The boys were involved in an epic – at 9-7 down they played two great points to get back to 9-9 and then saved another match point at 10-9 down. We then had our own match point at 11-10 but the Spanish number one hit a brilliant winner. In the end the boys lost 13-11 so Spain won the match and the tie 4-2. It was a disappointing end but the team can be very proud of our efforts. The team was represented by Jack Molloy, Barnaby Smith, Emily Appleton and Alexandra Hunter. They were a real credit to themselves and to the IC of GB at all times.

The concept of the IC Junior Challenge is absolutely flourishing and the idea of “Hands across the net, friendship across the ocean” was fully supported during this great week in Barcelona. It was a wonderful week that the players and I will never forget. I have already written to the IC of GB committee to thank them for the opportunity that they have given me and the players.
